Electricity Cheaper in UK Than Nigeria — Energy Expert

By Erewunmi Peace

A Nigerian energy expert has revealed that electricity in the United Kingdom is effectively cheaper than in Nigeria, citing high tariffs and inconsistent power supply as key issues in the country’s electricity sector.
Nick Agule, an experienced energy analyst, made the statement during a recent television interview, emphasizing that Nigerian consumers pay more for electricity despite frequent power outages, whereas UK households enjoy more reliable supply at comparatively affordable rates relative to income.

Agule noted that for many Nigerians, electricity costs consume a significant portion of household budgets, with frequent grid collapses and high tariffs making it difficult to access consistent power.

“Even though electricity may appear numerically cheaper in Nigeria, the combination of frequent outages and unreliable supply means consumers end up paying more in practice,” he said.

Supporting his claim, reports show that a minimum wage earner in Nigeria can afford far fewer units of electricity than a counterpart in the UK, where electricity is stable and widely accessible.

Agule’s observations highlight the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, including the need for infrastructure investment, effective regulation, and improved billing systems.

The expert’s comments have sparked renewed debate about electricity pricing, affordability, and the urgent need for reforms to make power more accessible and cheaper for Nigerian households.
