NIMC Launches Ward-Level Enrollment to Reach 180 Million NIN Target

By Erewunmi Peace

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the launch of ward-level National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment, aimed at making registration more accessible across Nigeria and helping the country move closer to its goal of 180 million registered NINs.

Starting Monday, February 16, 2026, NIMC will take registration services directly to communities nationwide, particularly underserved and grassroots areas, to ensure residents can obtain their NIN without traveling to urban registration centres.

The initiative is free of charge, following a presidential directive to expand access to identity services.

The commission is also engaging state governments, local authorities, traditional leaders, and community organisations to ensure smooth operations during the exercise.

NIMC’s ward-level enrollment program is expected to:

  • Boost NIN registration participation nationwide
  • Reduce travel burdens for residents

•Improve access to government services and financial inclusion

This milestone comes as part of Nigeria’s broader efforts to provide every citizen and legal resident with a secure, verifiable national identity.
