Lawyers Demand Implementation of 2014 National Conference Report to Tackle Insecurity in Nigeria

By Erewunmi Peace

A group of senior lawyers has called on the federal government to revisit and implement recommendations from the 2014 National Conference (Confab) Report as a solution to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges.

Speaking during a recent public forum, the legal experts criticized the government’s handling of insecurity, citing persistent issues such as banditry, kidnappings, and communal clashes. They argued that the 2014 Confab Report provides a comprehensive framework for structural reforms, particularly in decentralizing security and strengthening local policing arrangements.

The lawyers emphasized that the current centralized security system has shown significant limitations, and adopting the Confab’s proposals could help improve accountability, enhance governance, and create more effective strategies to protect lives and property.

The 2014 National Conference brought together diverse delegates to deliberate on national reforms, including governance, security, fiscal federalism, and social development. While parts of the report have previously been implemented, the lawyers insisted that critical recommendations related to security and governance remain largely unaddressed.

Civil society observers and policy analysts have long suggested that revisiting the 2014 Confab Report could serve as a blueprint for structural solutions to Nigeria’s security crisis, reinforcing calls for broader national dialogue and reform.
