Expert Calls for Systemic Reform to Boost Women’s Representation in Decision-Making Spaces

By Erewunmi Peace

A leading gender advocate has called for urgent systemic reforms to increase women’s representation in decision-making spaces across Nigeria.

Dr. Abiola Akiyode Afolabi, Executive Chair of the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), emphasized the need to move beyond symbolic inclusion and address the structural challenges that continue to limit women’s participation in leadership and governance.

Speaking at a recent engagement, Afolabi highlighted persistent barriers such as cultural norms, financial constraints, political exclusion, and institutional bias, which she said have significantly reduced women’s visibility and influence in governance processes.

According to her, achieving meaningful gender inclusion requires deliberate policy reforms, stronger legal frameworks, and sustained advocacy efforts.

“Women must not only be present but must also have real influence in decision-making processes,” she stated, stressing that representation is essential for balanced development and inclusive governance.
Recent data continues to show low female representation in Nigeria’s political and administrative leadership structures, despite global and regional commitments to gender equality.

Stakeholders have also renewed calls for legislative reforms, including the consideration of special measures that would increase women’s political participation and leadership opportunities.
Gender equality advocates argue that inclusive leadership strengthens democratic institutions, improves policy outcomes, and ensures that diverse perspectives are reflected in national development strategies.

The renewed call adds momentum to ongoing conversations around gender equity, political reform, and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
