BEDC Receives 75,000 Free Prepaid Meters, Warns Customers Against Payment

The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has received 75,000 free prepaid electricity meters under the Federal Government’s free metering programme. The company has warned customers not to pay anyone for the meters or their installation.
BEDC Managing Director, Jonathan Lawani, said the distribution of meters has begun across its four franchise states — Edo, Delta, Ondo, and Ekiti — and the company expects a total of 161,000 meters to be supplied under the programme.
“These meters and their installation are completely free. Any attempt to collect money from customers should be reported immediately,” Lawani emphasized.
The company also addressed concerns from some consumers who fear that the meters might increase electricity consumption, assuring that the meters are standard and do not affect billing unfairly.
BEDC urged all beneficiaries to accept the free meters and to report any fraudsters attempting to collect money in connection with the programme. The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to expand electricity access and improve metering across Nigeria.
