The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has informed the National Assembly that it will require ₦873.78 billion to conduct the 2027 general elections across Nigeria.
INEC Chairman Prof.
Joash Amupitan presented the commission’s 2026 budget proposal, highlighting that the requested amount is significantly higher than the ₦313 billion allocated for the 2023 elections. He explained that the funds will cover all stages of the electoral process, including logistics, personnel, technology, security coordination, and capital expenditures.
“The budget is designed to ensure credible, transparent, and free elections nationwide. Early release of funds will prevent operational delays and underfunding,” the commission stated.
In addition to the election-specific budget, INEC requested ₦171 billion for its routine operations in 2026, covering bye-elections, administrative costs, and other statutory activities.
Lawmakers have been urged to approve and release the funds promptly to allow adequate preparation for the nationwide polls.
Analysts note that proper funding will be critical to maintaining transparency, efficiency, and credibility in the 2027 elections.
