Microsoft AI Chief Predicts Widespread Automation of White-Collar Tasks Within 12–18 Months

Microsoft’s AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, has warned that many white-collar jobs could be automated within the next 12 to 18 months.
Speaking in a recent interview, Suleyman highlighted the rapid progress of AI, particularly models capable of performing complex tasks such as coding, data analysis, and document drafting more efficiently than humans.
He stressed that this timeline refers to the automation of tasks rather than entire jobs, noting that AI tools will likely handle routine responsibilities first, while humans focus on oversight, strategy, and creative work.
Suleyman’s comments come amid growing debate in the tech industry about AI’s impact on employment.
While some experts predict widespread disruption, others argue AI will augment human work, creating new roles and opportunities.
Industry observers also note that AI-assisted coding tools are already widely used, signaling a shift in how professional work is done. Suleyman described the future as one where “professional-grade AI agents” could support or replace many traditional office functions.
“Most of those tasks will be fully automated in the next 12 to 18 months,” Suleyman said, highlighting the transformative potential of AI in workplaces across sectors.
The forecast has sparked conversations about reskilling, workforce adaptation, and the ethical use of AI, as businesses and employees prepare for a new era of technology-driven work.
