Nurses’ Strike Disrupts Hospital Services in Kaduna

By Erewunmi Peace

Healthcare services at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital have been significantly disrupted following an indefinite strike action by nurses.

The industrial action, led by members of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), began after unresolved concerns over welfare packages, career progression, and promotion structures.

Services Affected

Patients and their families have reported delays in treatment and limited access to medical care as nursing staff withdrew their services. The strike has particularly affected routine clinical operations, leaving only skeletal services in place for emergency cases.

Sources within the hospital revealed that several wards experienced reduced activity due to the absence of nursing personnel, who play a critical role in patient care and hospital coordination.

Union’s Position
Union representatives stated that the decision to embark on the strike followed failed negotiations with hospital management. According to them, the action became necessary after repeated demands regarding improved working conditions and structured career advancement were not addressed.
They emphasized that the welfare of nurses directly impacts the quality of healthcare delivery.

Hospital Management Reacts

In response, hospital management expressed concern over the strike, noting that discussions were ongoing prior to the action. Officials assured the public that efforts are being made to maintain essential services while dialogue continues to resolve the dispute.

Broader Implications

The strike has raised concerns among residents of Kaduna State, particularly families relying on mental health services provided by the hospital. Stakeholders are urging both parties to reach an amicable resolution to prevent prolonged disruption of critical healthcare services.
