APWEN Advocates Gender-Inclusive STEM Curriculum in Nigerian School

By Erewunmi Peace

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has called for the urgent integration of gender-inclusive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricula in schools across Nigeria.

The association emphasized that promoting inclusive STEM education from an early stage is critical to increasing female participation in science and engineering fields and bridging the gender gap in the sector.

Strengthening Policies and Educational Reforms
APWEN urged policymakers and relevant stakeholders to implement stronger educational policies that ensure equal access to STEM opportunities for girls.

The body highlighted the need for curriculum reforms that actively encourage female participation and remove systemic barriers limiting girls’ interest and advancement in science-related disciplines.

According to the association, tracking gender representation in STEM programs and introducing accountability measures would help create measurable progress in closing the gap.

Early Exposure and Practical Learning
The association stressed the importance of introducing hands-on, project-based STEM learning at primary and secondary school levels.

By making science and technology subjects more engaging and practical, schools can spark curiosity and sustain students’ interest, especially among girls.

APWEN also called for improved infrastructure, including well-equipped laboratories, digital tools, and internet access, particularly in underserved and rural communities.

Tackling Cultural Stereotypes

The group noted that cultural stereotypes and societal expectations often discourage girls from pursuing STEM careers.

It therefore recommended sustained advocacy campaigns, mentorship programs, and partnerships with industry stakeholders to inspire and support young girls.

By promoting female role models in engineering and technology, APWEN believes more girls will be encouraged to see STEM as an achievable and rewarding career path.

Building a Sustainable Future

APWEN maintained that achieving gender equity in STEM is not only a matter of fairness but also a strategic move for national development. Increasing women’s participation in science and technology will strengthen innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to empowering girls and women in engineering and called on government agencies, educators, and private sector partners to collaborate in making gender-inclusive STEM education a national priority.
