Babcock University Enforces Strict Dress Code, Bans Dreadlocks
By Erewunmi Peace
Babcock University has announced a new, stricter dress code for students, which will take effect at the start of the second semester in January 2026.
The directive includes the ban of dreadlocks and several other types of clothing deemed inappropriate for campus.
The university stated that all previous “hair-pass” permits, which allowed exceptions for certain hairstyles, are now illegal and no longer recognized. Students are expected to comply fully with the updated regulations.
Key Provisions of the New Dress Code
The dress code prohibits:
- Male students with voluminous or unkempt hair, beards, or dreadlocks
- Female students with extreme or indecent hairstyles
- Body-hugging outfits, sleeveless blouses or dresses
- Sagging trousers, baggy or boot-cut trousers, and over-length pants
- Bubu, danshiki, joggers, and sportswear
Improper accessories, including tying scarves inappropriately to academic wear
Violations of the new rules may attract disciplinary measures, the university added.
Purpose of the Policy
The university explained that the update aims to reinforce discipline and uphold appropriate conduct within the academic environment, particularly as students prepare for examinations.
Babcock University joins a growing list of Nigerian tertiary institutions implementing more structured dress codes, reflecting an increased focus on campus decorum and student presentation.
