Soludo Shuts Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market Over Sit-at-Home Defiance

By Erewunmi Peace

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has ordered the temporary closure of the Nkwo Nnewi Auto Spare Parts Market for one week after traders defied government directives to resume operations on Monday, February 23, 2026.

The closure was enforced following reports that a significant number of traders continued to observe the sit-at-home practice, despite previous warnings to open for business. The Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, led state officials to implement the shutdown, ensuring compliance with the governor’s directive.

Government Statement and Enforcement

Authorities stated that the market will remain closed until February 29, 2026, with a warning that non-compliance upon reopening could lead to further sanctions. The government emphasised that this action is part of a broader effort to restore daily economic activities in the state and curb disruptions caused by the prolonged sit-at-home culture.

Governor Soludo’s administration has previously implemented similar measures, including temporary closures in other major markets such as the Onitsha Main Market, to enforce adherence to official work schedules and promote economic stability.

Impact on Traders and the Economy

Market traders have expressed mixed reactions, with some citing the difficulty of immediately resuming operations, while others acknowledge the need to comply for the overall economic benefit. Analysts say consistent enforcement of such directives is intended to boost local commerce, ensure orderly market operations, and reinforce government authority.

The state government has assured the public that it will monitor compliance closely and work with traders to prevent future disruptions while maintaining the balance between enforcement and economic productivity.
