Healthcare costs in Nigeria have surged significantly, with healthcare inflation reaching 30.35%, according to recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report shows that while overall inflation has shown signs of easing, the cost of medical goods and services continues to rise sharply. This increase affects hospital services, prescription drugs, medical consultations, laboratory tests, and other healthcare-related expenses.

Healthcare Rising Faster

At 30.35% year-on-year, healthcare inflation is rising at a much faster rate than the general inflation rate. This means that medical expenses are increasing more rapidly than the prices of most other goods and services in the country.

For many Nigerians, this development has intensified financial pressure, especially for households managing chronic illnesses, maternity care, or emergency treatments.

Why Are Medical Costs Increasing?

Experts link the rise in healthcare costs to several factors, including:

• Increased cost of imported drugs and medical equipment
• Foreign exchange fluctuations
• Rising transportation and logistics expenses
• Higher operational costs for hospitals and clinics

Private healthcare providers, in particular, have had to adjust their service charges to cope with these rising costs.

The spike in healthcare inflation raises concerns about accessibility and affordability. Many families are forced to make difficult decisions regarding medical treatment due to financial constraints.

Public health analysts have called for stronger health insurance coverage, improved local drug production, and government interventions to cushion the impact on citizens.
