After 144 Years, Sagrada Família Reaches Its Full Height

By Erewunmi Peace

After 144 years of construction, Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Família has finally reached its full height, marking a historic milestone for the world’s tallest church.

The basilica, designed by legendary architect Antoni Gaudí, now stands at 172.5 meters (566 feet), crowned by the final cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ. This milestone completes the exterior construction, making it officially the tallest church in the world.
While the exterior is now complete, work continues on the interior and decorative elements, with the final completion of the entire basilica expected in the coming years.

Construction began in 1882, and over more than a century, the project has faced delays due to wars, funding challenges, and the complex nature of Gaudí’s designs.

The completion of the exterior is a significant step forward, bringing one of the world’s most ambitious architectural projects closer to its long-awaited finish.
