Atiku Reacts to Fintiri’s Defection, Says Governors Joining APC for ‘Personal Survival’

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the recent defection of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the wave of defections to the ruling party as motivated by personal survival rather than genuine commitment to its agenda.

Speaking on Wednesday, Atiku stated that while every politician has the right to choose their political alignment, the trend of governors leaving the PDP for the APC is largely opportunistic, aimed at securing personal political interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The decision by some governors to join the APC is more about ensuring their personal survival than reflecting the wishes of the people,” Atiku said.

Atiku also emphasized that the upcoming 2027 elections would serve as a referendum on the APC’s governance, underscoring the importance of public choice over political maneuvering.

The former Vice President’s comments come amid a series of high-profile defections from the PDP to the APC, which have generated significant debate over loyalty, governance, and political strategy in Nigeria.

Political analysts note that such defections are common in Nigerian politics, particularly in the lead-up to major elections, but Atiku’s statement highlights growing concern among opposition leaders about the motivations behind these moves.
