APC Set to Retain Yilwatda, Basiru as Party Moves Toward Consensus Ahead of National Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) appears poised to return its current leadership team as the party prepares for its 2026 National Convention, with strong indications that Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and Dr. Ajibola Basiru will continue as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.
According to party sources and stakeholders within the ruling party, the APC is moving toward a consensus arrangement for its National Working Committee (NWC) ahead of the convention scheduled for late March 2026.
Leadership Continuity and Consensus Plan
Insiders familiar with ongoing discussions say that Prof. Yilwatda and Dr. Basiru are likely to retain their top posts, as party leaders aim to promote unity and reduce internal disputes during the convention period.
Party officials believe maintaining continuity in leadership will help ensure stability within the APC at a time when preparations for the 2027 general elections are beginning to gather momentum.
A consensus model is reportedly being adopted for electing members of the National Working Committee, a move intended to minimize competition-driven conflict and strengthen internal cohesion.
Stakeholder Consultations Ongoing
Party leaders, including governors and senior stakeholders, are said to be consulting widely to secure broad support for the proposed leadership structure before the formal commencement of the convention.

In a related development, the party extended the deadline for the purchase and submission of expression of interest and nomination forms, giving aspirants additional time to complete the required processes. However, the dates for the zonal congress and national convention remain unchanged.
