Thallium Sulphate Controversy: Osuntokun Accuses El-Rufai of Political Diversion

By Erewunmi Peace

A former aide to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Akin Osuntokuan, has accused former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of attempting to divert public attention from corruption allegations by raising concerns over the alleged importation of thallium sulphate.

The controversy began after El-Rufai reportedly wrote to the National Security Adviser requesting clarification regarding reports that approximately 10 kilograms of thallium sulphate — a highly toxic and regulated substance — had been imported into the country.

Reacting to the development, Osuntokun described the move as a distraction strategy, suggesting that the former governor was attempting to shift focus away from ongoing corruption-related investigations.

However, supporters of El-Rufai argue that his inquiry was a legitimate call for transparency on a matter involving national security and public safety.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation of wrongdoing regarding the alleged chemical importation. Similarly, corruption investigations involving the former governor remain under legal review.

The situation continues to generate political debate, with both sides presenting contrasting narratives.
