“Nothing Must Happen to El-Rufai” — Atiku Warns Federal Government

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the safety and constitutional rights of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, amid reports surrounding his detention.

In a public statement released on Monday, Atiku expressed concern over what he described as a lack of transparency regarding El-Rufai’s condition and whereabouts.

He urged authorities to clarify which agency is holding the former governor and to provide assurances about his health, access to legal representation, and contact with family members.

Atiku stressed that in a democratic society, the rights of every citizen — including political figures — must be protected under the law. He warned that the government would be held accountable should anything adverse happen to El-Rufai while in custody.

The development comes amid heightened political tension in the country, with observers closely watching the response of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

As of press time, there has been no official detailed response from relevant federal authorities addressing the concerns raised. However, political analysts say the situation could generate further debate about rule of law, due process, and political accountability.

El-Rufai, who previously served as governor of Kaduna State, remains a prominent figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
