Dangote Refinery, NNPCL Forge Strategic Alliance to Secure Nigeria’s Energy Future

By Erewunmi Peace

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) have announced a renewed strategic alliance aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s energy security and accelerating industrial development.

The partnership was reinforced during a high-level visit by NNPCL executives to the Dangote Refinery complex in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Both organisations pledged deeper collaboration across refining, supply chain integration, and broader energy infrastructure development.

President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, described the collaboration as critical to achieving Nigeria’s long-term energy independence and boosting domestic refining capacity. He emphasised that cooperation between the state oil company and the private refinery would enhance value creation within the country and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strategic partnerships that promote national energy stability and economic growth. According to him, closer alignment between both entities is expected to unlock new opportunities in refining efficiency, distribution, and downstream sector development.

Why the Alliance Matters

The Dangote Refinery, one of the largest single-train refineries in the world, is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s local refining capacity. Industry analysts say a stronger working relationship between NNPCL and the refinery could:

  • Reduce Nigeria’s dependence on fuel imports
  • Stabilise domestic petroleum supply
  • Support foreign exchange conservation
  • Drive job creation and industrial expansion

The renewed alliance signals a shift toward greater collaboration between public and private players in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, at a time when the country is seeking to reform and strengthen its energy value chain.
