TCN Commissions 300 MVA Power Transformer at Egbin Substation

By Erewunmi Peace

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a 300 MVA power transformer at the 330/132/33 kV Egbin Transmission Substation, boosting the substation’s capacity from 300 MVA to 450 MVA. The upgrade is aimed at strengthening electricity transmission and improving power supply reliability for Lagos and neighboring areas.

TCN officials said the transformer was installed and tested by the company’s engineering team within six weeks. The project forms part of TCN’s ongoing efforts to modernize the national grid, reduce power outages, and ensure efficient electricity distribution across critical load centers.

Impact on Power Supply

The Egbin substation upgrade is expected to enhance bulk power delivery to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), benefiting consumers in Ikorodu, Shagamu, Ijede, and surrounding communities. By increasing the substation’s capacity, the initiative will help meet growing electricity demand and reduce the strain on the regional grid.

Context

The Egbin Substation, located near Lagos, is a major node in Nigeria’s national grid and supplies power to millions of residents and businesses. TCN has emphasized that strategic infrastructure upgrades, like this transformer installation, are critical to achieving grid stability and supporting national energy targets.

TCN further stated that additional upgrades and maintenance projects are ongoing at other substations nationwide to ensure a more reliable and efficient power sector.
