Minister Orders Concrete Roads for Long-Lasting Federal Highways
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government, through the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has directed that major federal highways should be constructed using concrete pavement instead of traditional asphalt. The move is aimed at building longer-lasting roads and reducing the frequency and cost of maintenance.
During an inspection of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, Minister Umahi emphasized that concrete roads, while more expensive upfront, offer greater durability and can last for decades under proper maintenance. Some projects are even expected to last up to 100 years, making them a cost-effective solution in the long term.
This shift aligns with the Federal Ministry of Works’ plan to adopt reinforced concrete technology for strategic corridors across the country. Officials say that selected federal road projects will now prioritize concrete construction to improve road quality and safety.
While not all existing asphalt roads will be immediately converted, the directive marks a significant step toward modernizing Nigeria’s highway infrastructure, ensuring smoother, safer, and more sustainable travel for commuters and transporters alike.
