The Anambra State Government has commenced the demolition of alleged illegal structures at Onitsha Main Market, sparking controversy following reports of an existing court order restraining such action.

The demolition exercise, reportedly led by authorities in Onitsha North Local Government Area with backing from the state government, is said to be part of efforts to restore the market’s original layout and address congestion.

Government’s Position
Officials maintain that the exercise targets only unauthorized and illegally constructed extensions that obstruct walkways and roads within the market. Authorities had earlier issued notices to affected traders, asking them to remove their goods before enforcement began.
