IGP Kayode Egbetokun Resigns Amid Security Turmoil, Presidency Confirms

By Erewunmi Peace

The Presidency has confirmed that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has stepped down from his position, marking a major change in Nigeria’s security leadership. The resignation was officially accepted on 24 February 2026 after a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

While some media reports hinted at pressure due to ongoing security challenges, the Presidency stated that Egbetokun resigned to focus on personal and family matters. The official statement emphasized that the resignation was voluntary and not a dismissal.

Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Tunji Disu is reportedly set to take over as acting IGP, ensuring continuity in police operations during this transitional period.

This development comes at a critical time for Nigeria, as security concerns remain a top national priority. Analysts suggest that the leadership change could signal a renewed focus on addressing pressing security challenges across the country.

More updates will follow as the Presidency and the Police Service release additional details regarding the transition.
