Rivers Assembly Halts Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

By Erewunmi Peace

The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially suspended the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following weeks of political tension and legal challenges.

The impeachment process, initiated earlier this year, was based on allegations of gross misconduct and constitutional violations.

However, during a plenary session on Monday, lawmakers decided to halt the proceedings, citing ongoing court injunctions and legal complexities surrounding the case.

Political analysts note that the suspension follows interventions from the federal government, including President Bola Tinubu, which encouraged dialogue and adherence to constitutional procedures.
This development comes amid a tense political climate in Rivers State, where the Assembly had previously issued notices under Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution.

By halting the impeachment, the House of Assembly has effectively paused the political crisis, allowing both the governor and his deputy to continue in office while legal matters are addressed.
