Public criticism has followed a recent increase in medical service charges at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), with some patients and social media users alleging the privatization of laboratory services.
The fee hike affects several departments, including the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), medical and private wards, and outpatient services.

Reports indicate that some patients are concerned about the affordability of treatment and the apparent outsourcing of laboratory services at the hospital’s Accident & Emergency (A&E) unit.

Official Response

UBTH management has clarified that the partnership with a private laboratory is intended to complement, not replace, the hospital’s existing diagnostic services. The initiative is aimed at enhancing service delivery and reducing turnaround time for laboratory results.

The Edo State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has also pushed back against claims of full privatization, emphasizing that the hospital remains publicly managed and that the lab collaboration is a supplementary measure to improve patient care.
