Engineers Farouk Ahmed, Gbenga Komolafe Resign
By Erewunmi Peace
Engineers Farouk Ahmed and Gbenga Komolafe have resigned from their positions as chief executives of Nigeria’s key petroleum regulatory agencies, prompting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate successors to the Senate for confirmation.
Engineer Farouk Ahmed served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), while Engineer Gbenga Komolafe was the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). Their resignations were formally communicated to the Presidency and accepted.
Following their exit, President Tinubu forwarded the names of nominated replacements to the Nigerian Senate in line with statutory requirements under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). The nominees will undergo screening and confirmation before assuming office.
The development comes at a critical period for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, as the regulatory agencies play central roles in policy implementation, investment regulation, and industry oversight. Analysts note that leadership changes at the NMDPRA and NUPRC could influence ongoing reforms in the petroleum industry.
Until the confirmation of the new nominees, transitional arrangements are expected to be put in place to ensure continuity of operations within both regulatory bodies.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the nominations in the coming days.
