How to Apply for a TIN in Nigeria
For Individuals
Individuals can apply for a TIN online using either their National Identification Number (NIN) or Bank Verification Number (BVN) through the official Joint Tax Board portal.
Applicants are required to provide basic personal details, after which the TIN is generated upon successful verification.
Alternatively, individuals may visit their State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office to register in person.
For Businesses
Business owners must first register their business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). With the CAC registration details, they can apply for a TIN online via the JTB portal or visit a Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office for physical registration.
Processing Time
Online applications are typically processed within 24 to 72 hours, provided all information submitted is correct. Physical applications may take longer depending on the office and workload.
Cost of Registration
Obtaining a TIN in Nigeria is completely free. Authorities have warned members of the public to avoid agents or individuals demanding payment for TIN registration.
Why a TIN Is Important
A TIN helps the government track tax obligations and ensures transparency in revenue collection. Without it, individuals and businesses may face difficulties accessing banking services, government contracts, and regulatory approvals.
