IGP Tunji Disu Sets Up State Police Committee, Pushes Decentralised Policing

By Erewunmi Peace

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state police across Nigeria, signaling a major step toward decentralised policing.

The committee, chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, is tasked with developing a framework to guide state governments in establishing and managing their own policing structures. This initiative aligns with the federal government’s ongoing efforts to reform the nation’s security architecture and enhance local law enforcement.

In a statement during the inauguration, IGP Disu emphasized the importance of decentralised policing in improving public safety and strengthening collaboration between federal and state authorities.

The formation of this committee comes shortly after Disu’s confirmation as Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police. Security experts say this move could mark the first concrete step toward implementing the long-discussed concept of state police in the country.

Further updates are expected as the committee begins its work and develops guidelines for state-level policing structures.
