Wike: Power Is Not Given, Critics Will Face Electoral Consequences
By Erewunmi Peace
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has responded to critics calling for his removal, saying that “power is not given, it is taken” and warning that political opponents underestimating his influence will face consequences at the polls.
Speaking at a political event in his Obio-Akpor constituency, Wike stressed that his authority comes from the people and their votes, not from online commentators or opposition voices.
He emphasized that only President Bola Tinubu, as the appointing authority, has the power to remove him from office.
While some headlines have interpreted his statements as threats, Wike’s message was primarily political rhetoric, highlighting that electoral processes, not personal retaliation, determine political outcomes.
He added that those opposing him politically should be aware that underestimating his support base could lead to losses at the ballot box, reinforcing the importance of grassroots engagement in Nigeria’s democracy.
Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, has maintained a strong presence in national politics and continues to assert his influence through both political engagement and strategic public messaging.
