Bodija Explosion Victims Demand N30 Billion Relief Disbursement

By Erewunmi Peace

Victims of the January 2024 Bodija explosion in Ibadan have demanded the full disbursement of the N30 billion federal intervention fund, citing delays and unequal compensation as major concerns.

Community representatives and victims told reporters that the relief fund, meant for reconstruction and compensation, has yet to reach many affected households, leaving several victims struggling to rebuild their homes and businesses.

Eyewitnesses and affected residents explained that some families have received partial payments, while others have received nothing.

The demand highlights growing frustration over the management and distribution of the federal relief fund, which was released to Oyo State by the Federal Government shortly after the explosion.

The Oyo State Government confirmed the release of N30 billion, emphasizing that the funds are intended for reconstruction, victim support, and community rehabilitation. Officials, however, noted that proper documentation and verification of beneficiaries are required before full disbursement.

The Bodija explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024, destroyed several buildings, caused injuries, and resulted in multiple fatalities.

Since then, victims and community leaders have been calling for transparent and fair compensation, stressing the urgent need for support to rebuild affected homes and businesses.

The demand from victims underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in managing relief funds.

Stakeholders are urging both federal and state authorities to expedite the verification process to ensure all rightful beneficiaries receive their due support.
