EFCC Witness Says Lawyer Was Arrested With $2m Allegedly Linked to Godwin Emefiele

By Erewunmi Peace

A witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has told the court that a lawyer was arrested with over $2 million in cash allegedly connected to former Central Bank governor Godwin Emefiele.

The EFCC investigator made the statement while testifying in the ongoing trial involving the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the witness, EFCC operatives arrested lawyer Collins Omeife with about $2.045 million in cash. During the investigation, the witness claimed the lawyer allegedly said the money belonged to Emefiele and was received through the former governor’s personal assistant.

The investigator further told the court that the money was allegedly intended for the purchase and renovation of properties in Lagos, including areas such as Ikoyi and Lekki.

The testimony was presented as part of the EFCC’s evidence in the ongoing corruption case against the former CBN governor.

However, Emefiele has denied the allegations, and the case is still being heard in court. No final judgment has yet been delivered.

The trial continues as the court hears more witnesses and reviews evidence presented by the prosecution.
