FG’s Silence on Ozekhome UK Property Saga ‘Deafening’ — NBA Anti-Corruption Chair
By Erewunmi Peace
The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Anti-Corruption Committee, Babafemi Badejo, has criticized the Federal Government over what he described as its continued silence on the controversial UK property dispute involving Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mike Ozekhome.
Badejo made the remarks while reacting to the lack of public updates on the matter, despite earlier assurances by the Federal Government that the issue would be investigated.
According to him, the government’s failure to provide clarity on the status of the probe is “deafening” and risks undermining public confidence in the country’s anti-corruption efforts.
The controversy centers on a London property dispute involving Ozekhome and the estate of the late former Minister of Defence, Jeremiah Useni.
Allegations surrounding ownership of the property and the use of documents have generated public debate in recent months.
Earlier, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had stated that the Federal Government would look into the matter following widespread public interest.
However, Badejo noted that no official update has been provided since the assurance, stressing that transparency is crucial, particularly when allegations involve prominent legal practitioners.
He emphasized that while allegations alone do not establish guilt, the government owes Nigerians a duty to clarify the outcome or progress of any investigation it has publicly committed to.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government has not issued any new statement on the matter.
