Groundbreaking HIV Prevention Drug to Arrive Nigeria in March, Says FG

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that a new HIV prevention drug, Lenacapavir, is expected to arrive in the country in March 2026, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against the HIV epidemic.

The announcement was made by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), the government agency responsible for coordinating the country’s HIV/AIDS response.

About the Drug

Lenacapavir is a long-acting injectable pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication. Unlike traditional oral PrEP, which must be taken daily, Lenacapavir requires only two injections per year, providing a more convenient and reliable option for individuals at risk of HIV infection. This innovative treatment is expected to expand access to HIV prevention and improve adherence among users.

Government Plans and Rollout

According to NACA, the drug will be introduced as part of the country’s broader strategy to reduce new HIV infections and strengthen preventive healthcare services. The rollout will target populations most at risk, including young adults, key populations, and communities with high prevalence rates.

The government emphasized that the introduction of Lenacapavir aligns with global HIV prevention guidelines and demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging new scientific advancements in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Why This Is Significant

Experts note that long-acting injectable PrEP like Lenacapavir could transform HIV prevention by reducing daily pill fatigue and improving adherence. It is seen as a major step forward in achieving Nigeria’s goal of controlling the HIV epidemic and moving toward zero new infections.

Looking Ahead

The Federal Government has assured that necessary logistics, distribution frameworks, and awareness campaigns are being put in place to ensure smooth delivery and accessibility once the drug arrives. Health authorities are also expected to train medical personnel on administering the new injectable PrEP safely and effectively.

With Lenacapavir’s arrival, Nigeria joins other countries adopting innovative HIV prevention methods, offering hope for millions at risk and strengthening the nation’s public health response.
