Soyinka Leads Pyrates Confraternity to Honour Late Scholar Biodun Jeyifo

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka led members of the Pyrates Confraternity to pay their final respects to renowned Nigerian scholar Biodun Jeyifo during his burial ceremony in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Jeyifo, a respected literary critic and academic, was laid to rest at St. James the Great Cathedral Burial Ground in Ibadan.

Members of the confraternity gathered to perform traditional farewell rites in honour of their late colleague.

During the ceremony, Soyinka and other members of the group sang and carried out symbolic tributes to celebrate the life and contributions of the late professor.

Biodun Jeyifo was widely known for his contributions to literary studies and higher education in Nigeria. He also served as the pioneer president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), where he played an important role in advocating for the welfare of university lecturers and the development of Nigeria’s education sector.

The Pyrates Confraternity, founded in 1952 at the University of Ibadan by Wole Soyinka and other founding members, is known for its cultural traditions and social activism.

The burial ceremony attracted academics, colleagues, and members of the confraternity who gathered to honour the legacy of the late scholar.
