Lagos Policemen Return ₦2.2 Million From ₦3.3 Million Allegedly Extorted From Couple

By Erewunmi Peace

Some policemen attached to the Lagos State Police Command have reportedly returned ₦2.2 million out of the ₦3.3 million allegedly extorted from a couple following their unlawful detention, according to an investigative report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

The incident reportedly occurred at the Area H Police Command in Ogudu, Lagos, where the couple was detained after officers allegedly accused them of offences that were later found to be unsubstantiated.

Partial Refund After Public Exposure

Following public attention and complaints filed through the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU), the officers involved reportedly returned part of the money to the victims.

However, the refund did not cover the full amount allegedly taken.

According to sources familiar with the case, the policemen claimed that the remaining sum could not be fully refunded because “many of us have shared the rest,” a statement that has since sparked public outrage and renewed criticism of police accountability in Nigeria.

Attempts at Settlement
Reports indicate that the officers initially attempted to persuade the victims to accept a partial refund and treat the matter as settled. It was only after sustained pressure and media exposure that a larger portion of the money was returned.

The victims were reportedly assisted by concerned individuals who helped escalate the complaint through official police oversight channels.

Silence From Police Authorities

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Lagos State Police Command confirming disciplinary actions against the officers involved or explaining why the full amount has not been refunded.

The incident has once again raised concerns about alleged extortion, abuse of power, and lack of internal accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

Public Reaction

Civil society groups and members of the public have called for:

A full refund of the remaining money

Transparent investigation into the officers involved

Stronger enforcement of police disciplinary mechanisms

The case adds to ongoing national conversations about police reform, citizens’ rights, and trust in law enforcement.
