Teachers, students, and staff of Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College in Lagos narrowly escaped death after a four-storey building housing the school collapsed on Monday in the Ogba area of the city.

According to eyewitness reports, the building collapsed just minutes after everyone had been evacuated, preventing what could have been a major tragedy. The structure, located on 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in Aguda, reportedly gave way around midday, collapsing three minutes after students and staff had left the premises.

Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Fire Service, rushed to the scene to secure the area and prevent further incidents. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were recorded following the collapse.

Residents and school staff praised the quick action of the teachers and school authorities, which ensured that all students and personnel were safely evacuated before the building fell.

The incident has raised concerns about building safety and the structural integrity of older constructions in Lagos, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of building codes and regular inspections.

Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, and officials have warned the public to avoid the area until the site is fully secured.
