The Federal Government of Nigeria has reacted to the arrest of 42 Nigerian nationals in Mozambique, calling for clarification and due process from the authorities involved.

Reports indicate that the Nigerians were apprehended at a spare parts market during an operation carried out by Mozambican security officials. The incident has sparked concerns among Nigerian authorities and members of the diaspora community.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) strongly condemned the arrests and demanded the immediate release of the detainees if no formal charges are brought against them.

Chairperson of the commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, stated that while every country has the right to enforce its laws, the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens abroad must be respected.

She urged the Mozambican authorities to either formally charge the detained Nigerians in accordance with the law or release them without delay.

According to reports from the diaspora community, the arrested individuals are traders operating within the spare parts market. Concerns have also been raised about the conditions under which the detainees are being held.

The Nigerian government has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and working through diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and fair treatment of its citizens in Mozambique.
Observers say the development highlights the need for stronger engagement between African countries to protect the rights of migrant workers and traders across the continent.
