Exclusive Investigation Claims Rivers Councils Pay Over ₦5.7 Billion Monthly to Political Networks
By Erewunmi Peace
An investigative report has claimed that local government councils in Rivers State may be paying over ₦5.7 billion monthly to political networks and other affiliated groups, raising questions about fund allocation and governance.
According to the report by The Southern Examiner, the alleged payments involve all 23 local councils in the state. The investigation suggests that such expenditures could reduce funds available for developmental projects and community services.
The report, however, relies on information from unnamed sources and has not been independently verified by mainstream Nigerian media or confirmed by state authorities or the councils themselves.
Political observers note that Rivers State’s local government finances have long been under scrutiny, especially given ongoing tensions in council administration and elections. Analysts say transparency in fund allocation is critical to ensure that local communities benefit from government resources.
State authorities or council officials have yet to respond publicly to the report.
