Three More Senators Defect From PDP to APC
By Erewunmi Peace
Three sitting senators have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the ruling party’s position in the Nigerian Senate.
The senators — Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North), Aminu Iya Abbas (Adamawa Central), and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara Central) — submitted their defection letters during a plenary session, which were formally read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The lawmakers cited internal divisions and leadership crises within the PDP as key reasons for their decision to join the APC. Political analysts say the defections reflect ongoing realignments in Nigerian politics, particularly as parties prepare for upcoming elections.
The APC has welcomed the senators, stating that their inclusion would strengthen legislative support for government policies and enhance the party’s influence in the Senate. Meanwhile, the PDP is facing increasing pressure to resolve its internal leadership conflicts to prevent further defections.
These defections come amid a series of recent high-profile moves by lawmakers switching parties, signaling shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of national elections.
