No fewer than four ministers serving under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are reportedly considering leaving the Federal

Executive Council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to political sources, the ministers may step down from their positions in order to contest elective offices in their respective states when the next election cycle begins.

Under Nigerian electoral laws, political appointees are required to resign from their positions before participating in party primaries or contesting elections.

Ministers Linked to Possible Resignation
Among the ministers reportedly considering the move are:

• Adebayo Adelabu – Minister of Power
• Muhammad Ali Pate – Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare
• Yusuf Maitama Tuggar – Minister of Foreign Affairs
• Nkeiruka Onyejeocha – Minister of State for Labour and Employment

Sources suggest that some of the ministers may be interested in contesting governorship and other major political offices in the 2027 elections.

No Official Resignation Yet
Despite the reports, the presidency has not officially confirmed any resignation from the cabinet.

Government officials say the ministers are still actively performing their duties while political consultations continue ahead of the next electoral cycle.

2027 Political Calculations Begin

Political observers note that discussions around the 2027 elections are gradually gaining momentum across Nigeria, with several politicians already positioning themselves for future contests.

However, analysts say any minister who plans to run for office must resign from the cabinet before participating in party primaries, in line with the country’s electoral regulations.
