By Erewunmi Peace

At least 27 people are feared dead following a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen on several communities in Benue State, according to local sources.

The attack reportedly occurred in Kwande Local Government Area, where gunmen invaded rural settlements and opened fire on residents, leaving many dead and others injured.

Community leaders said the affected villages include Jato-Aka and nearby settlements, where residents were caught by surprise during the assault.

Residents Flee Communities

Survivors said many villagers fled into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities to escape the attackers.

Local authorities reported that several houses were destroyed, while many residents are currently missing.

Government Reaction
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, condemned the killings and described the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.

He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and restore peace to the affected communities.

Security Response

Security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the area to restore order and prevent further violence.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while the exact number of casualties is yet to be officially confirmed.

Rising Security Concerns

Benue State has experienced repeated clashes between farmers and suspected armed herdsmen in recent years, leading to displacement of thousands of residents.
Local leaders continue to call for stronger security presence and lasting solutions to the crisis.
