NiMet Issues Nationwide Advisory Over Extreme Heat in Nigeria

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide advisory warning Nigerians about extreme heat conditions currently affecting many parts of the country.

According to the agency, rising temperatures across several states could lead to heat stress, dehydration, and other health-related risks, particularly for people who spend long hours outdoors.
NiMet explained that the current weather pattern is typical of the late dry season, when temperatures are usually at their highest before the onset of the rainy season.

The agency urged Nigerians to take precautionary measures to reduce the impact of the intense heat. These include drinking plenty of water, staying in well-ventilated areas, avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and wearing light clothing.

Health experts have also advised vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, and individuals with underlying health conditions to be especially careful during this period.

NiMet noted that temperatures may remain high in the coming weeks and encouraged the public to follow weather updates and safety guidelines.

Authorities say public awareness and simple precautions can help reduce the health risks associated with the extreme heat.
