Tinubu’s Aide Criticizes Peter Obi Over Fuel Price Claims
By Erewunmi Peace
A media aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has responded to comments by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi regarding the rising cost of petrol in Nigeria.
Peter Obi had earlier criticized the federal government over the increasing fuel prices, stating that Nigeria remains vulnerable to fuel price fluctuations due to the absence of adequate petroleum reserves and long-term planning.
Reacting to the comments, Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Social Media, argued that the rise in petrol prices is not unique to Nigeria but largely influenced by global oil market conditions.
Olusegun noted that following the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023, petrol prices in Nigeria are now determined by market forces such as global crude oil prices, exchange rates, and supply chain factors.
He also suggested that criticism of the current pricing structure overlooks the realities of a deregulated petroleum market.
The debate highlights ongoing political discussions in Nigeria about fuel pricing and economic reforms since the federal government removed subsidies on petrol shortly after President Tinubu assumed office.
Analysts say the removal of fuel subsidy continues to generate debate among political leaders, economists, and citizens as the country navigates the effects of the policy.
More reactions from political stakeholders are expected as discussions around Nigeria’s energy policy continue.
