Lagos Court Fines Ship, 10 Sailors $6 Million for Cocaine Smuggling

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fined a cargo vessel and 10 foreign sailors a total of $6 million for their involvement in cocaine smuggling, in a case prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The sailors, identified as foreign nationals, were arrested in November 2025 at the Apapa Port after NDLEA operatives discovered approximately 20 kilograms of cocaine concealed aboard their vessel, MV Nord Bosporus.
During court proceedings, the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges as part of a plea bargain agreement. Following this, the court imposed financial penalties, including a $6 million fine and additional monetary payments in naira.
The NDLEA described the judgment as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against drug trafficking, emphasizing its commitment to not only apprehend offenders but also target the assets used in illegal operations.
Authorities noted that the ruling sends a strong message to international drug trafficking networks that Nigeria remains firm in combating illicit drug activities within its borders.
Further investigations and enforcement actions are expected to continue as part of broader efforts to curb drug-related crimes in the country.
