Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has stirred political debate after stating that no northerner should contest the presidency in the 2027 general elections.

Fintiri made the remark during a television interview, where he argued that power should remain in the southern region in line with Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement.

According to the governor, allowing the South to complete eight years in office would promote fairness, balance, and national unity.

He emphasized that the principle of power rotation between the North and South has long been a stabilizing factor in Nigeria’s political system, urging stakeholders to respect the arrangement.

The statement has since generated mixed reactions across the country, with some political actors supporting the call for equity, while others insist that the Nigerian Constitution allows any qualified citizen to contest for the presidency regardless of region.
