Lagos Power Outage: EKEDC Begins Repairs After Gas Tanker Explosion

By Erewunmi Peace

Residents across parts of Lagos experienced a major power outage following a gas tanker explosion along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, prompting swift response from the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC).

The incident reportedly occurred in the Sangotedo area after a gas tanker was involved in a collision, triggering a massive fire that spread rapidly and caused widespread damage.

EKEDC confirmed that the explosion affected key electricity infrastructure, including major feeders supplying power to communities within the Ibeju-Lekki axis. As a result, several areas were thrown into darkness.

Affected locations include Sangotedo, Awoyaya, Majek, Eputu, Lakowe, and surrounding communities. Residents in these areas have been experiencing disruption in electricity supply since the incident.

In response, EKEDC has deployed technical teams to assess the extent of the damage and begin immediate repair works. The company assured customers that efforts are ongoing to restore power as quickly as possible while ensuring safety.

The explosion also caused significant property damage, with reports of burnt vehicles, shops, and nearby structures. Emergency responders were present at the scene to contain the fire and prevent further destruction.

Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and avoid the affected area as investigations and repair operations continue.

EKEDC has reiterated its commitment to restoring electricity and keeping the public informed as progress is made.
