Ogun 2027: Race Heats Up as Multiple Aspirants Jostle for Governorship

By Erewunmi Peace

Political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State are gathering momentum, with several aspirants already positioning themselves for the race.

Although no official list of candidates has been confirmed, a number of politicians across major parties have either declared interest or are being widely speculated to join the contest.

Among those who have publicly declared their ambition are former governorship aspirant Gboyega Isiaka and Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, both seeking to secure their party’s ticket ahead of the election.

Other prominent political figures are also reportedly consulting and building support structures, signaling what analysts describe as an early and competitive buildup to the 2027 polls.

Observers note that the increasing number of aspirants reflects the strategic importance of Ogun State in Nigeria’s political landscape, as well as heightened interest in succeeding the current administration.

However, analysts caution that the field remains fluid, as many aspirants are yet to formally declare, and party primaries—which will determine official candidates—are still some time away.

The contest is expected to intensify in the coming months as political alignments shift and parties begin internal consultations.

The 2027 election will mark the end of the tenure of the current governor, opening the door for a new leadership contest in the state.

For now, the growing list of interested contenders highlights the early start of what is shaping up to be a closely watched political race.
