By Erewunmi Peace

A truck was engulfed in flames on Saturday evening at the Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing panic among motorists and commuters in the area.

According to reports, the truck, which was carrying an empty container, suddenly caught fire while in motion. The incident raised immediate concerns due to the history of similar accidents along the busy expressway.

Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle managed to escape unharmed before the fire intensified, preventing any loss of life.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire Service quickly responded to the scene to contain the situation.

Firefighters worked promptly to extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby vehicles and infrastructure. Traffic officials also helped manage the flow of vehicles, reducing congestion caused by the incident.

The fire led to temporary disruption of traffic along the expressway, with motorists experiencing delays as emergency responders carried out their duties.

Normal traffic flow was later restored after the fire was brought under control and the affected vehicle was cleared from the road.

Otedola Bridge has gained notoriety over the years due to frequent tanker and truck-related fire incidents, often resulting in significant damage and casualties.

Authorities continue to urge drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure proper vehicle maintenance and adhere strictly to safety regulations.

The quick response of emergency services helped avert a potential disaster, while the safe escape of the driver remains a positive outcome of the incident. Residents and road users are advised to remain cautious and report any emergencies promptly.
