Analyst Urges Jonathan to Avoid 2027 Race, Calls Northern Support ‘Zero Political Value’

Political commentator Chidi Amuta has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan against contesting the 2027 presidential election, describing any potential run — particularly one backed by northern interests — as a “project of zero political value.”
In an article published on The News Nigeria titled “Jonathan, Don’t Just Run… Please Flee!”, Amuta argued that a Jonathan candidacy would neither threaten President Bola Tinubu’s chances for a second term nor add significant value to the political equation.
“The prospect of a Jonathan run sponsored by the north cannot frighten Tinubu. Nor can the possible support of a Jonathan add any significant value to the Tinubu return for a second term,” Amuta wrote.
According to him, such a move would amount to a “transactional venture with little mercantile ingenuity” and would ultimately cost Jonathan his remaining political relevance. He warned that Jonathan’s “little political capital would be eroded” and his reputation as an “ambassador of democracy” could diminish.
Amuta further noted that Jonathan lacks the financial strength to mount a formidable campaign, emphasizing that any such venture would result in “a net loss” for the former president.
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria between 2010 and 2015, has not officially declared interest in the 2027 presidential race. However, recent political discussions have linked him to possible northern endorsements.
