The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) has called on Nigerian lawmakers to increase funding for HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) programs, warning that declining international support could threaten ongoing progress in disease control.

The appeal was made during a recent engagement with members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, where AHF representatives emphasized the urgent need for stronger domestic investment in public health.

According to the organization, many HIV/AIDS treatment programs in Nigeria have historically relied on foreign donor funding. However, with signs that external financial support may reduce in the coming years, there are growing concerns about the sustainability of treatment and prevention efforts.

AHF noted that without increased government intervention, millions of Nigerians living with HIV could face challenges accessing life-saving medication and healthcare services.

The organization also stressed the importance of sustained funding in combating tuberculosis, which often coexists with HIV and remains a major public health issue in the country.

Lawmakers were urged to prioritize health sector funding and implement policies that ensure consistent and adequate support for HIV/AIDS programs nationwide.

Public health experts say Nigeria has made significant progress in reducing HIV infections and improving access to treatment, but maintaining these gains will require continued commitment and increased investment from both federal and state governments.

The call by AHF highlights the need for proactive measures to secure the future of HIV/AIDS response efforts in Nigeria.
