Okurounmu: 1999 Constitution Favours North, Undermines Nigeria’s Stability
By Erewunmi Peace
Former Senator Femi Okurounmu has claimed that Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution structurally favours the northern region, warning that this imbalance undermines national stability and unity.
Speaking recently, Okurounmu argued that the current constitutional framework gives the North a numerical and political advantage in national decision-making, particularly in the National Assembly. He said this influence has affected legislative outcomes, governance, and policy direction over the years.
The former lawmaker also criticized the adoption and amendment process of the 1999 Constitution, describing it as lacking full democratic legitimacy. He emphasized the need for reforms to address perceived inequities in political representation and federal governance.
Okurounmu’s remarks have reignited debates about constitutional reform in Nigeria, with different political and civil society groups weighing in on how to strengthen equity and national cohesion.
While his comments reflect his perspective, they are part of a broader discussion on the balance of power, regional representation, and national unity in the country.
